Precision Inline Inspection for Engine Components – Camshafts & Valves
Desktop Type; Centering Type
TIMI_F; TIMI_P
Background of the Application
In high-performance engines, camshafts and valves directly influence valve timing, airflow, combustion efficiency, and durability. Camshafts require precise control of base circle diameter, lift height, and phase angle, while valves demand accurate cone angle and coaxiality for proper sealing. Traditional contact-based CMM or profilometer inspection is slow, operator-dependent, and unsuitable for real-time production feedback.
Solution
USDV’s TIMI precision rotary imaging platform uses ultra-telecentric optics and non-contact measurement to perform full 360° rotational inspection in a single cycle. It automatically measures camshaft parameters (base circle, lift, profile, phase, overlap) and valve dimensions (cone angle, coaxiality, shaft diameter/length) with micron-level accuracy. The system can be integrated directly into production lines for real-time SPC feedback and process control.
Benefits
• 5–10× faster than CMM inspection, enabling true inline quality control
• Micron-level precision with high repeatability and no risk of surface damage
• Real-time data reporting for immediate process adjustments
• Reduced operator dependency and training costs
• Enhanced production consistency and defect prevention
